Helga Chart: Mixed Media

Helga introduced us to many of her techniques for developing composition and texture using mixed media and featuring iconic structures such as Bass rock and the Kew Gardens Pagoda.

Her apparently spontaneous work has a lengthy process of conception and the use of her numerous sketchbooks, which are worked from primary sources.

We made stencils to form shapes onto our paintings and removed colour with sponges. We were encouraged to be explorative and use a variety of textures and pigments.

Paintings don't always work out and Helga shared some composition failures to illustrate the immediacy of her rapid way of working. Examples of successful compositions too -
